Greetings,

We would like to advocate in support of modifying the PBH Covenants to allow residents to have chickens on their property. Our next door neighbors take care of a chicken coop which is NOT in PBH (it’s in Sunshine Canyon) that has had up to 12 chickens in it at a time. Below are the Pros and Cons of our experience:

PROs

  • Fresh wonderfully tasting eggs.

  • They are pleasing to listen to, and because there are no roosters, there is no loud crowing to wake us up early in the morning.

  • They eat kitchen scraps and leafy greens, and in return give manure and mulch for our gardens.

  • They have a fenced in “run”, as well as a “house” for roosting and wintertime warmth. The only danger from predators seems to be a rare visit by a hawk, or occasionally a fox observing from afar. It’s clear to us that there is no danger to us with our neighbors having chickens next door.

CONs

  • If chickens are allowed to run free, vigilance on the owners’ part is required. Some chickens have been lost due to neighborhood dogs and a hawk. Obviously an appropriately built structure is required.

Boulder county allows a minimum of 50 chickens per lot (see enclosed), so the County has no problem with them. We propose that PBH residents be allowed to keep the maximum allowable number according to the County, as long as they have an enclosed area where they can be kept, and that no roosters be allowed.

Thank you.
